🏔️ A Day of Magic between the Caves and the Nature: Your Itinerary from Cattolica

Prepare yourself to live an experience that unites the mystery of the depths of the earth to the beauty regenerating of a park natural. At only 25 minutes of car from the Hotel Gabbiano, there hides a treasure that you will leave without breath. Here is the plan perfect for your day of exploration:

🦇 Step 1: Descend into the Bowels of the Earth at the Onferno Caves

Imagine crossing the threshold of the subterranean world and starting an exciting descent towards the center of the earth. The Onferno Caves, in Gemmano, are an incredible karst complex that extends for over 800 meters, carved in millennia by the waters of a stream. It is a sensory journey made of lights and shadows, silence and the murmur of the trickles of water, surrounded by crystalline gypsums and unique rock formations.

Here is what awaits you:

  • An Enveloping Atmosphere: You will descend among steps immersed in the woods, feeling the breath of the mountain and admiring a constant microclimate of 12-13°C all year (a cool refuge perfect for the summer!).

  • Expert Guides and Hidden Secrets: Accompanied by speleologists, you will explore fascinating halls and mysterious galleries. The flagship is the Quarina Hall, one of the largest of Europe, famous for its enormous and spectacular gypsum conifications that sprout from the ceiling.

  • The Capital of the Bats: This hall is the summer residence of a colony of over 6,000 bats of at least 6 different species! An educational and unique experience to observe these fascinating lords of the night in their habitat (in limited periods and with respect).

  • Practical Advice: The visits are always guided and change with the seasons. We advise you comfortable clothing and, above all, a waterproof jacket to enjoy at the best the exploration, even in summer!

🌿 Step 2: Breathe the Freedom in the Oriented Nature Reserve

After having explored the caves, emerge into the pulsating heart of nature. The surrounding area is protected inside the Oriented Nature Reserve of Onferno, a true treasure chest of biodiversity. With about 274 hectares in the picturesque Valconca, this site is of Community importance (SIC) and is part of the European network Natura 2000.

Why explore the Reserve:

  • A Paradise for Observation: Walk along paths immersed in the luxuriant vegetation. It is the ideal habitat for an extraordinary variety of animal and plant species, including some rare and protected. Spot raptors in flight, very colorful butterflies and, with a bit of luck, the porcupine or the roe deer that have returned to colonize these wild areas.

  • Culture and Science: The seat of the Reserve is in the ancient Pieve of Santa Colomba, splendidly restored after the Second World War. Here you will find the Visitor Center and an interesting Naturalistic Museum, which shows the unique geology of the area, specimens of the local fauna and even archaeological artifacts.

  • Technology and Tradition: Do not lose the Multifunctional Multimedia Museum and the Botanical Garden, perfect to discover the spontaneous plants and the majestic secular oaks.

  • The Path of the Panorama: Among the various routes, we advise you the “Great Ring CAI 011” (about 3 hours). The walk will take you up to the highest point, the Ripa della Morte (532 m asl), for a breathtaking view of the badlands and the oak groves with Mediterranean scents.
